The girl group BLACKPINK has extended its contract to continue its "group activities" with YG Entertainment.
On the 6th, YG announced, "We have concluded the board of directors' resolution regarding the signing of exclusive contracts for all four members of the artist BLACKPINK."
As a result, YG will safeguard its primary intellectual property rights.
In a press release issued after the announcement, YG stated, "Following thorough discussions with BLACKPINK, we have entered an exclusive contract for group activities based on a foundation of strong trust."
Consequently, BLACKPINK intends to persist with its group activities, including launching new albums and embarking on mega world tours, with the backing of YG.
Yang Hyun-seok, YG's executive producer, expressed, "I am delighted to continue our association with BLACKPINK. We will exert our utmost efforts to amplify BLACKPINK's radiance in the global music market in the future."
BLACKPINK made their debut on August 8, 2016, with the double title tracks "Whistle" and "Boombayah." The quartet—Jennie, Jisoo, Rosé, and Lisa—created a stir upon their debut as YG's new girl group, seamlessly combining skill and beauty.
In addition to their debut songs, they have ascended to K-pop stardom with tracks like "DDU-DU DDU-DU," "Kill This Love," "Lovesick Girls," "Pink Venom," and "Shut Down."
Their second full-length album, "BORN PINK," released in September last year, made history as the first K-pop girl group album to top the U.S. Billboard main album chart, "Billboard 200," and the U.K. official album chart, "Top 100," solidifying their status as global stars.
Furthermore, in the past year and this year, they achieved a record-breaking world tour for a K-pop girl group, drawing in 1.8 million attendees from around the globe.
BLACKPINK is acknowledged as the world's leading artist in terms of YouTube influence, with the music video for "DDU-DU DDU-DU" amassing 2.1 billion views and "Kill This Love" garnering 1.9 billion views. BLACKPINK's official YouTube channel boasts 92.3 million subscribers, ranking first globally.
However, it remains uncertain whether individual members, rather than participating in team activities, will sign exclusive contracts.
Given their international recognition and successful endeavors as singers, actors, and global luxury brand ambassadors, achieving consensus on all four members' terms may prove challenging.
Consequently, there is a strong likelihood that some members will individually depart from YG and pursue solo activities, while also engaging in team activities at YG through a "separate and together" approach, similar to other prominent groups.
YG has stated that discussions are underway regarding exclusive contracts for individual members.
