BTS member Jimin is set to release his first solo single, "Set Me Free Pt. 2," on his upcoming album FACE, due out on March 24. The release comes amid a hiatus for the South Korean pop group, allowing its members to focus on their solo careers and fulfill mandatory military service.
In an interview with Consequence of Sound, Jimin described the release as a new starting point and an opportunity to establish an identity separate from the global superstar septet. The track features majestic choir backing, a booming hip-hop beat, and urgent Auto-Tuned vocals.
“There isn’t a connection, and we weren’t trying to divide part one or part two,” he said. “But since it turns out my song talks about freedom and moving forward, and SUGA’s song talks about some of the stories that come before, I thought it would be good to come after that.”
“determination, passion, and overcoming” and that the title is about him, well, setting himself free. “So I thought it was important that I be the one to set myself free — not someone else,” he said. “In the end, I’m the one who has to set myself free.”
Explaining the title, Jimin said there is no original "Set Me Free" in his discography and that the sequel's name is a nod to a song on bandmate Suga's 2020 mixtape under the alter ego Agust D. He clarified that there is no connection between the two songs, but since his track talks about freedom and moving forward, he thought it would be fitting to come after Suga's.
Jimin said he focused on concepts of determination, passion, and overcoming in the track and that the title represents his desire to set himself free. He also expressed nervousness about his solo release but hoped to make his bandmates proud and not embarrass them.
“how I overcame… If people understand the emotions I’m trying to express, I’ll consider the album a success.”
The music video for "Set Me Free Pt. 2" features flashy choreography and was directed by Oui Kim. Jimin promised that his album FACE would explore his past and how he overcame it, and he hopes his fans can understand the emotions he expresses in it.
