"Squid Game: The Challenge," a reality show set in the world of the Netflix drama "Squid Game," is currently facing a lawsuit.
According to reports from US entertainment media outlets Hollywood Reporter and Deadline on the 23rd (local time), participants in "Squid Game: The Challenge" have submitted compensation claims against the production company. They allege suffering injuries, such as hypothermia and nerve damage, during filming due to adverse filming conditions.
Express Solicitors, a British law firm, has sent a compensation claim to the production company Studio Lambert on behalf of two participants who prefer to remain anonymous. The firm stated, "The participants endured filming in cold conditions, resulting in hypothermia and nerve damage. These injuries go beyond acceptable safety standards in the pursuit of entertainment."
The filming location, Cardington Studios, a former Royal Air Force base in Bedfordshire, was cited by the law firm. It explained that injuries occurred during the "Mugung Flower Bloom" game, which took place amid a cold wave.
Reports of participant injuries surfaced during the filming period, with Netflix responding that only three out of the 456 participants received treatment. The streaming platform denied allegations of severe injuries as "untrue."
Daniel Slade, the CEO of the law firm handling the lawsuit, commented, "Participants anticipated engaging in something interesting and never expected to endure injuries. One of the litigants mentioned witnessing another participant fainting on set and medical staff reacting urgently."
In response to inquiries from Deadline, a spokesperson for the program stated, "None of the participants have filed a lawsuit," emphasizing their commitment to the well-being of participants.
When questioned about reported injuries by the Hollywood Reporter the previous week, executive producer John Hay emphasized, "Welfare and safety are our top priorities. We have implemented appropriate measures to care for individuals."
Executive producer Steven Lambert reflected on the challenges faced during production, stating, "Securing the largest award in the history of TV competitions, earning $4.56 million, was no easy feat. While there were challenging moments, it was considerably more compassionate and manageable compared to some successful survival shows in the United States and other countries."
Netflix released the reality show "Squid Game: The Challenge" consisting of five episodes on the 22nd.
