What if K-pop idol albums didn't include photo cards? The Korean government has launched an investigation into the photocard marketing practices of K-pop entertainment.
The Fair Trade Commission is currently investigating allegations of idol photo card sales against three major enterprises: SM Entertainment, JYP Entertainment, and YG Entertainment. Recently, the FTC expanded its investigation to include HYBE as well.
Reports from the entertainment industry this month indicate that the FTC has conducted an on-site investigation into HYBE. This investigation was prompted by concerns that the excessive production of various types of photo cards exploits the passion of idol fans.
The investigation initially began with SM Entertainment on the 31st of last month, followed by on-site inspections of JYP Entertainment and YG Entertainment. As the investigation now encompasses HYBE, there are speculations that other major players like Cube Entertainment might also come under scrutiny. Typically, the "Big 5" entertainment companies include HYBE, Cube Entertainment, and the aforementioned three companies.
Photo cards are small card-sized items featuring photos of idol groups, included in albums and sold as part of merchandise. They often feature unreleased photos of celebrities, and some even come with autographs. However, photo cards have come under criticism for fueling excessive album hoarding. Collectors frequently buy albums in bulk to acquire all the different types of photo cards companies randomly insert and sell.
Analysts suggest that if unfair trade practices were involved in the sale of these products, it could be deemed a violation of the Fair Trade Act. The on-site investigation conducted by the FTC is seen as a proactive step to address these concerns.
Earlier last month, the Fair Trade Commission also initiated an on-site investigation into whether the five major entertainment companies, including HYBE, SM, YG, and JYP, violated subcontracting laws. Allegations suggest that these companies abused their power when outsourcing aspects of album and merchandise production.
An official from the Fair Trade Commission stated, "We are unable to disclose any details about the ongoing investigation."
