JTBC drama "King the Land," which is popular on Netflix, has issued another apology for the controversy surrounding the misrepresentation of Arab culture.
JTBC's Saturday-Sunday drama "King the Land" released a statement on the 12th through the official JTBC drama social network service (SNS) account.
King the Land stated, "Although we had no intention of caricaturing or distorting any particular country or culture, we sincerely apologize for any inconvenience caused to viewers without considering the impact on other cultures."
"We acknowledge that there was a lack of understanding, experience, and consideration for other cultures, and we will strive to create content that people from diverse cultures can enjoy together," they added.
The statement further mentioned, "We are committed to promptly addressing the problematic aspects of the show and the production team will exercise greater care to ensure a seamless viewing experience in the future."
This statement follows the initial apology released on the 10th.
"King the Land" faced criticism from both domestic and international viewers due to the portrayal of Arab Prince Samir in the series. In episodes 8 and 9, Samir, depicted as an Arab prince, was shown drinking at a bar that resembled a club and openly pursuing a woman.
Consequently, global viewers expressed their discontent with the depiction of a playboy character associated with an Arab role played by an Indian actor, engaging in drinking and portraying women in a derogatory manner. On social media platforms like Twitter, comments such as "Kdrama disrespects Arabs and Muslims" and "disregards the Arab prince, portraying him in a demeaning manner" were prevalent.
In response, "King the Land" released a statement on the 10th, clarifying that the characters, settings, and place names in the drama are fictional and that there was no intention to caricature or misrepresent any specific culture.
