A foreign couple caused controversy on social media when they posted a video claiming "Korea is racist" after failing to hitchhike from Seoul to Busan. The video was widely criticized for its baseless claims and was eventually deleted.
On the 6th, several online communities shared videos titled "Foreigners Claiming Korea is Racist." The videos showed a couple of foreign travelers attempting to hitchhike from Seoul to Busan but ultimately failing and taking the bus instead.
The couple, who are reportedly from Slovenia and funding their travels through TikTok videos, attempted to hitchhike from the rest area of Seoul Meeting Plaza. The woman in the video is seen holding a sign that says "Busan →" with a smile, but they were unable to find a ride. After several failed attempts, they gave up and took the bus to Busan, which took seven hours.
After their experience, they claimed that "traveling in Korea is difficult" and that "Korea is a country with severe racism." They also complained about the scenery in Busan, calling it "dull and boring."
Some have pointed out that the couple may have misunderstood the hitchhiking culture in Korea. The website "Hitchwiki" provides information about hitchhiking and states that it is "easy for foreigners to hitchhike" in Korea, adding that it helps to dress neatly and be well-groomed.
Despite this, the couple's claims of racism have been widely criticized as unfounded.
