The Seoul Metropolitan Government announced on the 4th that it will host the 2023 Seoul Light Gwanghwamun Festival, a mega media façade and light festival, in the Gwanghwamun Square area from the 15th to January 21st of the following year.
The festival is part of the "Seoul Winter Festa" and will feature an 800-meter-long media façade and lighting between Gwanghwamun Woldae and Gwanghwamun Square, both of which have been restored for the first time in 100 years.
The lighting ceremony will take place at 7:30 p.m. on the 15th at a special stage in front of the Sejong Center for the Performing Arts. Additionally, the public broadcast of KBS Cool FM's "Park Myung-soo's Radio Show" will be held at the same location at 6 p.m. on the 16th.
The festival will showcase media art exhibition programs involving 53 artists from 20 countries, including a Gwanghwamun Media Facade Show (project mapping), a lighting light show, a media gallery on the outer wall of the Sejong Center for the Performing Arts, K-culture screens at the Museum of Korean History, and light sculptures.
At Gwanghwamun Square, the media façade show "Moon-Digital Mining of Construction," featuring five world-class media artists, will be held for 35 minutes every day from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.
"The Moon of Construction - Digital Mining" is a media art piece by Lee In-am, reinterpreting the landscape of Hanyang during the Joseon Dynasty. On the 31st, the media facade and lighting light show programs will run six times until midnight and will operate flexibly from January next year.
Video works by five Korean and foreign artists under the theme of "Digital Abstraction" can also be seen on the K-culture screen at the Korean History Museum.
The media gallery on the outer wall of the Grand Theater of the Sejong Center for the Performing Arts presents works using video, such as artificial intelligence (AI) music and historical greats, which were popular in the past.
Drop the BIT, a light-related exhibition in Seoul Light Gwanghwamun and Atelier, will be on permanent display until March 31 next year.
On the west side of Gwanghwamun Square's Yukjo Madang, works on the theme of "Bits by Dada" will be displayed on a large LED display newly produced 14 meters long and 4 meters high for the festival. The digital-based works of eight domestic and foreign artists will be introduced.
Additionally, you can experience light sculptures and media sculptures such as "Manwol" and "Resilience-Daejeonhwan" by Kwon Chi-kyu and "Eternal Light-21c Mongyudo Island" by Han Ho, centered on the six-jo yard in Gwanghwamun Square.
A countdown event for the New Year will occur at 11:30 p.m. on Saturday around Gwanghwamun Square, with live coverage of reporters and interviews with citizens expected to enhance the New Year's mood.
Choi In-kyu, the Seoul Metropolitan Government's design policy officer, stated, "We encourage citizens' interest and participation as we aim to showcase Seoul's beating heart at Gwanghwamun Woldae, which has been restored for the first time in 100 years through Seoul Light Gwanghwamun."
