I’m interested in living rurally in South Korea – keen to take a break from the city and I like smaller communities, and I also heard you learn the language quicker since you have to use it more… any thoughts or tips? (still only thinking about it)

As a city boy my whole life, it’s a bit difficult to answer this but I will try.

You will definitely learn the language faster as most people will be speaking exclusively in Korean in rural areas. Also, you may be welcomed there since a lot of these rural areas are aging rapidly and are lacking young working people. However, at the same time rural towns also have a closed community vibe, so it might be hard to fit in. Really depends on where you go so I suggest you do a little travelling around to feel the vibe fore these towns.

One tip would be to choose a village that is close to a KTX or a large city. There is a severe disparity in public infrastructure from the cities to rural areas in Korea. Thus should you need any medical assistance or if you have to for some reason file legal papers and such – you would need to go to a city.
