Unfortunately, many single parents fight an uphill battle in Korea.

Firstly, single parenthood still has stigmas attached. Though social perception is slowly changing, many still view single parents as promiscuous, or unfit to raise a child properly. People still have a strong idea of a family being consisted of two parents, which is why many parents don’t divorce even if they are unhappy about their marriage.

Second, there is the financial aspect. Raising a child is very expensive in Korea, especially with the highly competitive environment in schools. In 2021, households with middle school and high school kids spent an average of 840,000 KRW(700USD) per month on education. There is not a lot of financial support for single parents, with only those in the lower end of income(1400USD and under per month) receiving small benefits of about 185 USD every month.

Lastly, Korea’s working culture itself is not very friendly to parenthood. While this culture is definitely changing, it’s still difficult to get back into the workforce after taking maternity leave. Working hours are long and unflexible for most companies. Thus it’s tough for the single parent,(or really anybody now that I say it) to balance work and family.
