On the 1st, Netflix released the second season of its original Korean drama series, "Sweet Home," to a global audience. Returning three years after its previous installment in December 2020, the latest season has fallen short of expectations, drawing criticism from fans who find it "disappointing."
Season 2 portrays the journey of survivors navigating a world where humans transform into monsters based on their desires, abandoning their previous setting, Grimm Home Apartments, in search of new homes. This installment incorporates various captivating elements, such as vibrant productions using computer graphics to depict the transformation of the owner into a monster and the introduction of new characters.
Surprisingly, viewers expressed reactions like "I'm confused," "I'm disappointed," and "I can't stay focused." The sudden introduction of new characters hindered audience immersion, and additional storylines, including a monster unit led by Yoo Oh-sung and a special disaster base on Bamseom where monster experiments take place, lacked tension. Critics noted a lack of a proper conflict storyline between the main characters, Song Kang and Lee Jin-wook, contributing to the overall dissatisfaction.
This sentiment extends to foreign viewers as well. On Rotten Tomatoes, the overseas content rating website, "Sweet Home" Season 2 holds a popcorn index score of 60 points (as of the time of writing), whereas the previous season maintains a score around 85 points.
IMDb, the world's largest content rating site, also reflects a considerable number of low ratings. Viewers expressed varied responses, including "This season was disappointing" and "There are too few protagonists."
Despite initially ranking second on Netflix in Korea upon release, "Sweet Home 2" has failed to secure the top spot in global countries, including Korea, since then.
