The news of T.O.P, a former member of Big Bang, appearing in Netflix's original series "Squid Game Season 2" has faced criticism.
Netflix announced the lineup for Season 2 of "Squid Game" through an official press release on the 29th. The new cast members include Park Kyu-young, Cho Yu-ri, Kang Ae-sim, Lee Da-wit, Lee Jin-wook, Roh Jae-won, and Won Ji-an. Among them, T.O.P from Big Bang attracted attention by being included.
T.O.P. enlisted as a compulsory police officer in February 2017 but was indicted without detention in June for previous cannabis use. He received a sentence of imprisonment until October and two years of probation in the first trial.
Since then, T.O.P has made remarks suggesting retirement through social media. In response to a netizen's message saying, "Don't come back," he replied, "I don't intend to either," and further stated in a live social media broadcast, "I won't make a comeback in Korea."
Notably, T.O.P left the group Big Bang in February of the previous year, and his exclusive contract with YG Entertainment was terminated.
However, T.O.P was compelled to backtrack on his retirement hints due to his involvement in "Squid Game" Season 2. This has led to criticism from internet users who recall his past drug charges, with some questioning the decision to include someone with a criminal record in a popular show.
Furthermore, T.O.P has not displayed his acting skills since the 2014 film "Tazza: The Hidden Card." This has raised doubts about his role in the highly anticipated series.
There have also been suspicions that T.O.P's best friend, Lee Jung-jae (who plays Sung Ki-hoon, the main character in "Squid Game"), recommended him for the role.
In response, Lee Jung-jae's agency, Artist Company, clarified that reports of Lee's involvement in the casting of "Squid Game 2" are false. They emphasized that casting decisions are solely the authority of the director and the production company.
The agency further stated, "Lee Jung-jae, more than anyone else, understands that many actors work diligently and are selected through auditions for 'Squid Game 2,' which generates significant interest."
