CNN highlighted Black Pink's performance in hanbok-inspired costumes that captivated music fans around the world at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, the largest music festival in the United States. On April 19th, CNN Style posted an article titled "Look of the Week: Coachella Headliner Black Pink, Wearing Korean Hanbok."
According to CNN Style's report, "On the festival's second day, Black Pink, a Korean K-pop girl group, made history on Saturday night by becoming the festival's first Asian headliner. Jennie, Jisoo, Lisa, and Rose wore hanbok on stage, showcasing Korea's rich cultural heritage and marking a groundbreaking moment."
"The song 'Pink Venom' began as soon as they appeared in their hanbok costumes, and each member wore black and pink costumes specially produced by Dolce & Gabbana," the report said. "Screenshots began to circulate as fans and BLINKs captured this moment. Fans commented, 'Black Pink's first appearance in hanbok on the biggest Western stage. They've already reached the top in their field.' They are among the best in their league."
The four modernized hanbok costumes worn by Black Pink on stage were specially made by the Korean pattern design brand Aur and traditional hanbok brand Geumdanje. Each costume was decorated with traditional Korean patterns (dancheong, peony, etc.) in a chulik silhouette.
Jang Ha-eun, the designer of OUWR, said, "This Black Pink costume was inspired by a type of hanbok called 'Chulik' among traditional Korean hanboks. Chulik is an outer garment worn from the Goryeo Dynasty to the Joseon Dynasty and is made up of a jeogori-style top and a pleated skirt."
She added, "The fabric and materials used in the costumes represent a harmony that combines tradition and modernity. I think it is a perfect match with Black Pink, a group that crosses Korea and the world. The silk fabric has various Korean motifs, and each member showcases traditional and Korean detailed elements such as Sipjangsaeng (Lisa), Dancheong (Rose), Moran (Jisoo), and Nature-Star (Jenny), creating a very antique beauty."
Finally, she said, "It is an honor to work on Black Pink's costume for the Coachella stage, enjoyed by people around the world, and to showcase the beauty of hanbok and the value of Korean culture."
Black Pink, who made history by becoming the first Asian artist to headline at the world's largest music festival, Coachella, will take the stage again on April 22nd to recreate the heat. In July, they will be the first K-pop artist to headline at the Hyde Park British Summer Time Festival, the UK's top music festival.
