Girl group "FIFTY FIFTY" is rising on the U.S. Billboard main single chart "Hot 100."
According to the U.S. music industry on the 17th (local time), "Cupid," the title track of "The Beginning: Cupid," released by "FIFTY FIFTY" on February 24, ranked 60th in the "Hot 100" on the 22nd.
The number has risen 25 places from 85th last week. Although it has stayed on the chart for four consecutive weeks after entering for the first time at No. 100, this is not enough to continue reversing the trend, which is accelerating its upward momentum. This proves that the group is continuously popular in the region, not just a fleeting trend.
"FIFTY FIFTY" entered "Hot 100" about four months after its debut with its first EP "THE FIFTY" on November 18 last year. It became the fastest K-pop group to enter the chart since its debut, beating syndrome girl group "Newjeans," which entered "Hot 100" six months after its debut with "Ditto." The entry of "Hot 100" for four consecutive weeks is particularly noteworthy as it is the same record as the global hit song "Kill This Love" of K-pop girl group "Black Pink."
Currently, the longest K-pop girl group song to stay on "Hot 100" is "Ice Cream" (2020), which BLACKPINK collaborated on with American pop star Selena Gomez. "Ice Cream" stayed on the Billboard Hot 100 chart for a total of eight weeks.
The pre-released song "Pink Venom" from BLACKPINK's second full-length album "Bon Pink" and Newjeans' "OMG" stayed on the chart for six weeks, tied for second place in this category. Newjeans' "Ditto" is in fourth place for five consecutive weeks. "Cupid" and "Kill This Love" are tied for fifth place.
In particular, "Cupid" is continuing to rise on the UK's official single chart, one of the world's two largest pop charts along with Billboard. It entered the singles top 100 (14-20 days) for three consecutive weeks, ranking 34th.
"Cupid" is a refreshing yet nostalgic retro synth-pop song that brought a new heyday for K-pop girl groups, triggered by Newjeans. Foreign composers made the melody, and member Kina participated in the rap making.
"FIFTY FIFTY" is called the miracle of idols from small and medium-sized entertainment and is making waves on the official charts and Billboard charts. Behind the popularity of "Cupid" are social media platforms such as TikTok. It spread widely as a number of TikTokers created a video of the song sped up, which more than doubled the speed of the original song.
In particular, a stage video posted by a TikToker calling it the "best free chorus of the year" became a catalyst. TikTok is a tool recently used by K-pop agencies as a major means of promotion, and it would have been difficult to achieve such results without the power of the original Easy Listening song.
The team's leader, Saena, said at a recent domestic press conference, "I was surprised to hear that the song was first responded to abroad. I didn't expect it at all. I think they liked our music because it's easy to listen to and has a soft synth-pop vibe. Thanks to TikTokers' use of our music, I think they listened to it a lot because the music was essentially good."
FIFTY FIFTY is one of the five K-pop girl groups that have entered the "Hot 100" chart, alongside Wonder Girls, BLACKPINK, TWICE, and Newjeans. In addition, including the global supergroup BTS, FIFTY FIFTY is the sixth K-pop group to enter the chart. Among K-pop soloists, BTS members, BLACKPINK's Rose and Lisa, Psy, CL from the group "2NE1," and Taeyang, a member of the group "Big Bang" and a solo singer, have also made it onto the "Hot 100" chart.
