HBO drama "The Idol," starring Black Pink's Jenny, has been invited to the non-competitive section of the Cannes Film Festival. While it is unclear whether Jenny will attend the festival as an actor, YG Entertainment stated that her attendance is undecided.
On April 13th, the 76th Cannes International Film Festival announced its invitations to the non-competitive category at the UGC Normandy Theater in Paris, France. The list included director Kim Ji-woon's "Spider House," "The Idol" (directed by Sam Levinson), "Indiana Jones: Dial of Destiny" (directed by James Mangold), and "Killers of the Flower Moon" (directed by Martin Scorsese).
Among them, "The Idol" is drawing attention as Jenny's first acting challenge. The drama tells the story of emerging pop idols and their relationships within the music industry, featuring global top artists such as Jenny, The Weeknd, Lily Rose Depp, and Troy Sivan.
When the casting news was announced in July last year, Jenny stated, "As soon as I read the script, I felt so attracted to it that I wanted to be a part of it." She added, "I'm very excited, I'll work hard, so I hope you watch with a warm eye."
Jenny's character in the drama is not yet known in detail, but she is known to have performed the role without difficulty, despite it being her first acting role.
As "The Idol" was selected for invitation to the Cannes Film Festival, there is growing interest in whether Jenny will attend the festival and step on the red carpet. "According to the organizers, it has not yet been confirmed whether Jenny will attend the Cannes Film Festival, but if Jenny, a well-known member of BLACKPINK, attends, the Cannes International Film Festival will be a big factor in attracting Generation Z," said the foreign media Deadline.
Regarding Jenny's attendance at Cannes, YG Entertainment told Maeil Business Star Today on April 14th that "Jenny's attendance at the Cannes Film Festival has yet to be decided."
Jenny is currently on a world tour with BLACKPINK and has a busy schedule, including an upcoming appearance at the Coachella Music Festival this month. It is still undecided whether Jenny will attend the Cannes Film Festival, but if she, a global superstar, attends, it is expected to generate significant attention.
The 76th Cannes International Film Festival will be held from May 16 to 27. Although no Korean films advanced to the competition sector, director Kim Ji-woon's "Spider's House" was invited to the non-competitive category, and "Hwaran" to the notable gaze category. Song Kang-ho, who won the Best Actor award for the movie "Broker" last year, is visiting Cannes for the eighth time for "Spider's House." Song Joong-ki of "Hwaran" was first invited to the Cannes Film Festival.
